Four Corners Project

About

The Four Corners Project focuses on improving the safety, usability, and ecological resilience of the Four Corners area in Clarksburg, MA. It is funded by the Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Program and is being facilitated by the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission. Visit the main project website to learn more and stay connected! https://fourcornersproject.com/

Background

The Four Corners area, located in the 100-year floodplain, includes the Community Center, Clarksburg School, Library, DPW, nearby neighborhoods, a sewer pumping station, and Town Field, which serves as an emergency shelter and student escape route. Since 1980, increased rainfall has led to more frequent flooding.

Town Field, once supported by maintained drainage, now experiences regular ponding, saturated fields, and muddy access routes after storms. Aging bridges and beaver activity near Hudson Brook further affect flooding and emergency access.

Since 2022, Clarksburg’s MVP Committee has worked to reduce flood risk and improve resilience by securing funding through the state’s Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) program. These efforts have focused on understanding site conditions, engaging the community, and developing potential solutions.

What's Been Done

Over the past few years, the Town, BRPC, and landscape design firm, Regenerative Design Group, have focused on planning and community engagement to identify solutions that support both infrastructure needs and everyday use of the area. Efforts have included:

  • Conceptual design and community engagement to prioritize access, parking, flood reduction, and walkability around Town Field, the school, and the Four Corners area
Design workshops with property owners and community members to shape ideas and refine concepts
  • Field data collection, including:
    • Topographic survey
    • Wetland delineation
    • Geotechnical evaluation
    • Hydrologic and Hydraulic (H&H) study of the Hudson Brook watershed
  • Playground design sessions with students, parents, and caregivers to identify play features and how the space should be used

What's Next

The MVP Committee and BRPC will present detailed design plans, review permitting and costs, and ask the community to help prioritize what moves forward first. Stay tuned for ways to participate and weigh in!
